Boothby Graffoe Interview (2013)

Get Barenaked chatted with musician and comedian Boothby Graffoe, who is currently delighting North American crowds as the opening act on the Last Summer on Earth tour…

Boothby on… LSOE

Hi Boothby! How is the Last Summer on Earth tour treating you?

Extremely well, thank you. It’s an amazing thing, so many people, so much stuff!

How do you find the North American audiences differ from the British crowds that you’re accustomed to?

They don’t, really. They are very warm and appreciative. Americans need to talk to their own media: as people, they are being badly misrepresented.

What has been your most memorable show on the tour so far?

All of them, dude!

You’re on huge stages and amphitheatres across the States, do you approach those shows differently to the smaller clubs and venues in the UK? Any pre-show rituals?

There are a lot more tunnels to go through before you get to the stage.

How is it to play alongside Guster and Ben Folds Five? Are you a fan of those bands?

Ben Folds is a stunning pianist and songwriter. His band are wonderful. Bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessie, fabulous musicians. Great people, too. Which is weird, isn’t it? I think if I was that talented I’d be much more difficult. Guster are nuts. Proper nuts. Brilliant songs, very anthemic, real tingle down the spine stuff. It’s an honour to be on the same bill.

If this really was the last summer on earth, what would be the top 3 things on your bucket list?

1. Go out to buy a bucket.
2. Be shocked by price of buckets.
3. Decide to wait for January sales.

Boothby on… BNL

BNL have been inviting you on stage for a rendition of Yoko Ono. Is there any other BNL song you’d like to give a whirl?

I’ll have to think about that. I’ll get back to you in a year. They have a lot of good songs. A…lot….

What’s your favourite tune from Grinning Streak?

Obviously the ones they’re doing live have got into my brain prettly heavily, but, er, no, I’m not going to pick favourites.

Who would win in a fight, you or Tyler?

Tyler won the last one, but, he was biting because he is a baldy bollocks.

What’s the strangest item on the BNL tour bus?

Jim Creeggan

Have you introduced the guys in BNL to any specific artist or comedian from your native land, and vice versa?

I’ve given Kevin a Nick Pynn Album. And he’s been making me watch a Canadian TV show from the 80’s called SCTV.

Are you and Kevin official yet?

Ha ha! (what?)

[I’ll take that as a yes!]

Boothby on… Boothby

Your latest album NOMAD came out earlier this year.
Tell us a bit about it…

It’s on sale here

NOMAD was funded via Kickstarter by friends and fans.
How did you find that process?

I’m still thanking people. It’s a great thing. Hoping to do it again with the next album.

If you could choose one song that everyone in the world could hear from your back catalogue, which would it be?

My wife would say “Attack of the 50ft Woman.” . I have a new song called “Still.” I would say, that one.

How you gonna A if you’re not that bright?

Good question.

You’ve toured alongside some huge names in comedy and in music, what have been your career highlights?

“If there’s a better place to be than where you are right now, you’re in the wrong place”.

What does the future hold for you: Can we expect new music and tours from you once LSOE is over?

Yeah, I got some things going on. Who wants to know?

Boothby’s bits and bobs

When were you last star-struck?

I get a bit giggly around Ed Robertson. And I met Ben Kweller the other day, so that was cool. I thought I saw William H Macy at the LA gig, but when I went over and asked for his autograph it turned out to be Halle Berry.

What would your Mastermind subject be?

“Questions I know the Answer to.”

Favourite cheese?

First celebrity crush?

1979. I was driving from a gig in Wimbledon and I ran over a Womble. He can’t remember anything about it. Which is ironic, right?

Worst heckle you’ve received?

Haven’t been heckled in a long time. Get some people shouting stuff out sometimes. Most recent one that made me smile was a guy who kept shouting: “Cats in a sack!”

What’s in your pocket right now?

3 plastic key cards for hotels we’re no longer staying at. American, Canadian loose change. A lighter, a pencil, and the 7 of Hearts.

Karaoke song of choice?

Jean Michel Jarre’s “Oxygene.”

Thanks for the fun interview, Boothby!
