GUEST REVIEW: BNLxPersuasions – by Laura
Get Barenaked reader Laura is suitably impressed with the latest BNL release. Here is her review of the new collaboration between Barenaked Ladies and The Persuasions…
Sometimes a truly great collaboration can be more than the sum of its parts. When there is chemistry, respect and loads of talent on both sides, sometimes magic happens. That is the case with the album, Ladies and Gentlemen: Barenaked Ladies and The Persuasions.
The 13 Barenaked Ladies songs, 1 Kevin Hearn song “Don’t Shuffle Me Back” and The Persuasions’ hit “Good Times”, shimmer and shine like something brand new. But if you know and love any of these songs already, be prepared to fall in love all over again.
I was going to go through each song and critique it, but somehow mere words don’t do these gems justice. I was also going to point out standouts, but as my eyes ran down each song and the memory of the tapestry of harmonies on each ran through my mind, I couldn’t point to a favorite. I do have to say though that Cliff Dawson of The Persuasions has made the song “The Old Apartment” all his own. I could listen to it over and over and over again.
This was recorded live off the floor, which means that everyone was in the same room singing and playing all of the instruments together. It takes a lot of talent and confidence to record this way. These two groups obviously had no problem at all and I’m more than a little sure that this is the reason for the great chemistry.
The energy and enthusiasm evident in every track speaks to the fun and camaraderie of the project. You can’t help but smile your way through the album.
Treat yourself to sonic joy. Listen to Narrow Streets, Gonna Walk, Don’t Shuffle Me Back, The Old Apartment, Keepin’ It Real, For You, Some Fantastic, Good Times, Odds Are, Sound of Your Voice, When I Fall, Maybe Katie, One Week, Four Seconds and I Can Sing and fall in love or… fall in love all over again.
This album is lightning caught in a bottle.
Thanks so much Laura!
